Inpatient rehabilitation unit

Specialists at our 33-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit help hundreds of people achieve their best possible levels of function. We care for people recovering from stroke, burns, trauma, surgery, or other life-changing events.

Your care team is led by a physiatrist, a physician with advanced training in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Your team includes nurses with special training in rehabilitation, as well as social workers, nutritionists, and respiratory therapists. When needed, your team collaborates with experts in orthopaedics, neurology, cardiology, burn injuries, and other specialties.

The inpatient rehabilitation unit at West Penn Hospital offers:

  • Highly trained therapists: Our physical and occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists have advanced training in treating people with neurological issues caused by stroke, brain injury, or a neurological disorder.
  •  Focused therapies: You participate in at least three hours of therapy, five days a week. A 55-foot-long ambulation hallway provides ample room for walking and improving balance and gait. When you’re ready, we venture out into the city to ease the transition into daily living.
  •  Advanced technologies: We offer wireless, electronic stimulation systems to improve wrist and hand functions. A weight-bearing system improves posture and balance and provides support while you walk on a treadmill or the floor.
  •  Patient comfort: Our large community room has many amenities for you and your loved ones. We have a self-playing piano, board games and puzzles, books and magazines, a television, and a computer.

Physical therapy

Our physical therapists customize treatment programs to improve your flexibility, endurance, strength, and balance. We offer:

  •  Pre-surgical preparation: Our educational sessions ensure that you and your caregivers know what to expect after a joint replacement, heart surgery, or other procedure. We help you have a smoother, faster recovery.
  •  Inpatient physical therapy: Following joint replacement surgery or other procedure, we get you up and moving safely in the hospital. We help you return home as quickly and safely as possible.
  •  Outpatient physical therapy: For your convenience, we have many AHN Therapy Services locations throughout Pittsburgh. Some clinics have specialized programs for hand problems, concussions, Parkinson’s disease, and balance and sensory issues (vestibular therapy).

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapists help you maintain independence and master daily activities like dressing, grooming, and preparing meals. We also help secure medical equipment to improve your ability to do other everyday tasks.

Lymphedema therapy

Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system gets clogged as a result of infections, trauma, heart disease, and cancer treatments. These blockages can cause swelling and pain in the arms or legs.

Our therapists offer complete decongestive therapy to improve lymph gland drainage. We also develop customized recovery programs and use compression garments to reduce swelling and pain.

Speech-language therapy

Speech-language pathologists work with people affected by strokes, brain injuries, neurological disorders, swallowing problems, and other medical conditions. We help improve your ability to talk, eat, swallow, and understand others when they talk. We also help bolster cognitive skills.

Home health services

AHN’s home health services program, Healthcare@Home, provides in-home physical therapy and rehabilitation services. We can assist with daily activities, such as bathing and grooming. We also provide skilled nursing care for chronic disease management.
