Cervical Cancer Diagnosis

Cervical cancer is a rare cancer of the cervix, which is the opening of the vagina. Often, spotting or bleeding is the only symptom. A quick, precise diagnosis is the first step to a rapid, efficient treatment plan.

Expert cervical cancer diagnosis at Allegheny Health Network

At the Cancer Institute, we use sophisticated technology to diagnose cervical cancer. You can expect the diagnostic process to be:

  • Rapid: We use proven techniques like Pap tests, biopsies, colposcopies, and the loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP). These tests help us quickly and accurately identify if there are abnormal cells.
  • Collaborative: We meet regularly to discuss each patient. You benefit from the expertise of multiple specialists working together to discuss your diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Supportive: Once we make a diagnosis, we work together with your family to offer every means of support. An oncology social worker and a Navigation Team provide reassurance and logistical coordination. An After Hours Oncology Clinic offers rapid medical care to patients with cancer, so you don’t need to go to an ER. And you have access to our comprehensive support services.

Diagnostic procedures for cervical cancer

Our cancer specialists have the expertise to get you the right diagnosis so you can begin treatment. We diagnose cervical cancer by examining your cervix for abnormal cells.

Initial tests for cervical cancer include:

  • Pap test: This diagnostic screening involves analyzing the secretions collected from your cervix. We use it to detect changes that may be cancerous or may lead to cancer.
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP): We use an electric wire loop to obtain a piece of tissue. We then examine the tissue under a microscope to look for abnormal cells.
  • Colposcopy: For this precise test, we use a specialized scope to examine an area of abnormal tissue on your cervix, vagina, or vulva.
