Lung Cancer Screening

A lung cancer diagnosis can be frightening. Fortunately, this type of cancer may be manageable, especially when caught early. Screening for lung cancer increases the chances of detecting the disease early, when it’s most treatable, and potentially most curable.

Lung Cancer Screenings at AHN

AHN utilizes low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans to screen people at high-risk for lung cancer, even when they’re not experiencing symptoms. If you fit either of the criteria below, contact us at (844) AHN-LUNG (844) 246-5864 to find out if you qualify for a screening:

  • Adult 50 to 80 who has smoked a pack a day for 20 years, or two packs a day for 10 years
  • Adult 50 to 80 who currently smokes or has quit within the past 15 years

Are you at risk?

Find out if you're at risk with our quick lung cancer risk assessment.

The National Lung Screening Clinical Trials showed that the screening through the use of LDCT scans saved lives, reducing lung cancer mortality by 20 percent.

If you qualify for the screening program, you will be contacted by an AHN lung cancer Care Navigator, who will inform you about the screening process, location of your screening and details about what the test results could indicate. The screening itself takes only about 15 minutes and requires no preparation or contrast injections. Our nurse navigator will also guide you through follow-up care and critical disease-prevention measures, such as smoking cessation programs.

All participants are eligible for smoking cessation services, whether through AHN or other community organizations, even those who call to inquire about screening but do not qualify.

Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the leading cause of cancer death. Smoking is the cause of about 85 percent of all lung cancer cases, and the risk increases with age. About 37 percent of U.S. adults are current or former smokers. Participants in the screening are not obligated to return to an Allegheny Health Network facility for treatment or follow-up.
