About the program

Our Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency strives to teach each resident to become a compassionate, ethical physician and life-long learner who provides excellent patient care.

We offer an accredited 4-year comprehensive training program for 6 residents per year, based in the high volume Allegheny Health Network.  West Penn Hospital is located in the center of Pittsburgh and is the heart of the Allegheny Health Network Women’s Institute. West Penn serves as the primary teaching site for our residents, accounting for over 90% of the resident experience, and is our only inpatient coverage responsibility.

Our residents receive excellent clinical training and are integrated into patient care from day one of residency with graduated responsibility and support from faculty and midlevel providers. Obstetric and gynecologic operative experiences begin in PGY-1, and all surgical cases and deliveries at West Penn are available for teaching purposes. Our curriculum includes a robust simulation program, and emphasizes outpatient and inpatient experiences with all the major subspecialties. Our vast volume across the specialties combined with unique programs including the Alexis Joy D’Achille Center for Perinatal Mental Health, Ryan Foundation Grant, and Perinatal Hope program provide unique breadth and depth of training.

The clinical experience is augmented by our academic environment including  protected didactic education, and funded conference attendance. Trainees at AHN regularly oversee students from Drexel University School of Medicine and graduate as skilled clinical instructors.

At West Penn Hospital, we are also focused on physician wellness. To this end, we host annual mentor mixers, team-building events at our off-campus conference, regular chair and program director rounds, as well as taking part in ACOG wellness week and resident-driven initiatives. Our benefits are competitive and our environment ideal for hands-on, comprehensive training in obstetrics and gynecology.

Our mission is to train diverse, compassionate, and ethical physicians and surgeons who are well equipped to practice in any environment, subspecialty or focus they choose, and who are committed to life-long learning and excellent patient care. This is achieved through our comprehensive curriculum, appropriate supervision, formal instruction, and formative feedback, while never losing sight of each resident’s individuality and personal goals. We value the rich diversity of our community, and believe that a diverse workforce and inclusive training environment are prerequisite for health equity. To that end, we are committed to fostering an environment where all are valued, appreciated, and affirmed of human dignity. We partner with our DEI leaders and Center for Inclusion Health to cultivate a curriculum teaching cultural competency and recognition of social determinates of health, both integrated longitudinally as well as through dedicated didactic content.

We welcome the opportunity to share our program with you and look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
