The Allegheny campus of the Drexel University College of Medicine provides an ideal learning environment for hand surgery fellows. The Hand Division consists of Edward Birdsong, MD, Colin Brabender, MD, Victor Greco, MD, Steven Regal, MD, John Rinaldi, MD, and Peter Tang, MD, MPH. The six faculty members maintain busy upper extremity practices, including surgery of the shoulder and elbow in addition to a large volume of hand surgery, making it a true upper extremity fellowship. Surgeries and technical skills are balanced with office hours to teach the art of making a diagnosis, non-operative treatment, and when to
operate. Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) is designated as a Regional Resource
(Level 1) Trauma Center. The 750-bed hospital serves as a five-state referral
base for trauma, microsurgery, and reconstructive surgery. The facility includes a modern, well-equipped 64-bed orthopaedic unit, 18-bed pediatric unit, and a surgery center. The faculty practices are located at AGH and well as other Allegheny Health Network surgery centers and hospitals.
Fellows participate in patient care through surgeries, peri-operatively, offices hours, emergency room consults, and in-patient hospital consults. The department supports its own orthopaedic surgery residency of five residents per
year. The newly designed Hand Conference Curriculum ensures that teaching is
devoted to all aspects of the hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgery.
In addition to weekly Hand Conference, there is a monthly Fellows' Power
Session. There is also the opportunity to attend Trauma and Sports Conference.
Journal club and Department Morbidity & Mortality Conference is monthly and
fellow evaluation meetings are every three months. Fellows are required to
publish two research/scholarly projects by the end of the fellowship year. The
department has an active biomechanics laboratory. This program is
ACGME-accredited in surgery of the hand.
