About the program

Letter from the program director

Thank you for your interest in the Vascular Surgery Residency Program at Allegheny General Hospital. Our program has enjoyed a distinct identity for over 20 years, and the practice has grown to encompass the both surgical and interventional procedures associated with vascular surgery.

The Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery includes the divisions of Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, and Vascular Surgery. Our faculty is committed to providing a robust, highly skilled educational experience in vascular surgery. Our residents are given the opportunity to rotate amongst several vascular surgery faculty members which enables exposure to a broad range of experience and teaching styles.

The program emphasizes broad-based clinical training. It is based in two tertiary care hospitals and residents will also rotate at a large community hospital. We perform a large number of tertiary care cases, but we also have a strong representation of fundamental vascular surgery cases. Our graduates will be well positioned to treat both routine and complex vascular surgery cases that they encounter in their practice.

Currently we offer two training pathways in vascular surgery:

  • Integrated Pathway – 5 years Vascular Surgery (PGY-1 – PGY-5)
  • Integrated 5 + 2 Pathway – 5 years Vascular Surgery (PGY-1 – PGY-5), 2 years Cardiothoracic Surgery (PGY-6 – PGY-7)
*Only program in the country that offers this pathway*

It is through one of these pathways that our graduates have pursued highly successful careers in both private and academic institutions across the country. Our commitment to developing our residents in all facets of their education is paramount to providing an excellent clinical education. For additional details on the exceptional training experience we offer, please explore our website and please feel free to contact us with questions. Thank you again for your interest.

Sincerely,
