Angela Costa, MPM, BSN, RN 

Angela Costa serves as the interim Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) of West Penn Hospital and VP of Clinical Nursing Operations at AHN.  From her first position within AHN as a staff nurse at Allegheny General Hospital more than 30 years ago, Ms. Costa rapidly advanced to Supervisor, Manager, Director, Division Director of Nursing, and interim VP/CNO positions at Allegheny General and Canonsburg hospitals before joining West Penn in September 2020.  Her areas of clinical expertise include trauma, critical care, and neurology/stroke.  She also served for two years as the Director of Clinical Services for the Center for Organ Recovery and Education with responsibility for forming relationships with coroners throughout western Pennsylvania and West Virginia and for education, quality outcomes, and 24-hour on-call direction of staff.

As VP of Clinical Nursing Operations at AHN, Ms. Costa assists the AHN Chief Nurse Executive with oversight of Nursing Operations for the network.  She participates in strategic planning; collaborates with hospital leadership and medical staff to identify, develop, and execute clinical care initiatives; develops, communicates, and executes strategies for robust staffing; fosters a culture of accountability and transformational leadership that supports continued learning and innovation; collaborates with other nurse leaders to create, execute, and refine strategies for ongoing improvements in Quality, Safety, and Value of patient care, Patient experience, Service excellence, Recruitment and retention, Evidence-based practice, and Fiscal accountability; leads analyses to support continuous improvement in patient care delivery and promotion of evidence-based best practices in clinical care; and provides leadership, management, and supervision to departments to achieve targeted goals.

Ms. Costa received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Duquesne University and in 1997 was awarded her Master of Public Policy and Management (MPM) degree from Carnegie Mellon University.  She has demonstrated her management skills in leading numerous interdisciplinary, nursing, and staff-leader teams to successfully improve teamwork, collaboration, processes, the professional practice environment, and patient outcomes.

Highlights of Ms. Costa’s professional career include attending a meeting with President Obama at the White House as one of 75 participants on President Obama’s new HealthCare Bill, resulting in Obama Care (September 2009) and receiving the Cameos of Caring Award – Advanced Practice, Nurse Manager Focus (November 2009).

Ms. Costa serves as an active member of the California University of Pennsylvania (CalU) Department of Nursing Advisory Board and on the Hospital and Health System Association of Pa. (HAP) as a member of the Nurse Ambassador Advocacy Initiative (2021).
