Allegheny Health Network to Provide Walk-in Mammograms this Spring

PITTSBURGH – Routine mammograms remain the most effective screening method for detecting breast cancer. To encourage women age 40 and over to undergo screening,  Allegheny Health Network (AHN) will host its second annual Spring Walk-In Mammogram campaign from May 1st through June 25th. Eligible women can walk in without an appointment at the following locations between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and receive a mammogram.

  • AHN North Fayette Health + Wellness Pavilion
  • AHN Imaging – Sewickley
  • AHN Outpatient Center – Hempfield
  • AHN Outpatient Center – Waterworks
  • AHN Outpatient Center – Uniontown
  • AHN Allegheny General Hospital Breast Center
  • AHN Jefferson Medical Office Breast Center

The American College of Radiology recommends that women who are at average risk of breast cancer get screening mammograms every year starting at age 40. To be eligible for a walk-in mammogram at AHN, you do not have to be an established AHN patient. Those undergoing screening will be responsible for copays and other out-of-pocket expenses as determined by their health insurance plan.

"Given one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, this is a topic that hits close to home for many," said Matthew Miller, MD, interim director of Breast Imaging. "We encourage women across our region to take advantage of this campaign which provides a convenient opportunity to get a potentially lifesaving mammogram and stay up to date on screening.”

Dr. Miller adds that patients should talk with their doctor about their individual breast cancer risk, as well as when and how often they should undergo screening.

AHN has over 20 Breast Care Centers across its footprint. Breast specialists employ advanced technology for breast health, offering a range of screening and diagnostic tools, including digital and 3D mammography for enhanced image clarity and cancer detection, particularly in dense breasts. Follow-up procedures include breast ultrasound to differentiate between cysts and solid masses, breast MRI for detailed imaging and tumor assessment, and fine-needle aspiration and core needle biopsies to obtain samples for testing and diagnosis.
